MANAGE YOUR MEASUREMENT ERRORS

By Jordan Dimitrov, Centennial College

Test instruments such as oscilloscopes and DMMs (digital multimeters) often let you get the measurement results you need with just the press of a button. But the number on a meter's display or the waveform on an oscilloscope's screen is not a perfect measurement. The value displayed is never exactly the same as the value that was applied to the instrument's input. In addition, instruments use different methods for making the same measurement. Errors are always present, and you need to know how much error you can tolerate.
